Smart meters can help put more solar power on the grid

At last count, 33 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have renewable energy targets, including solar generation of electricity (see map). Of those jurisdictions, close to half (14) are rolling out smart meters to most or all of their homes or businesses.

This is good for solar-powered electricity.

When too much solar generation is connected to the distribution grid in a local area, voltage can spike up and the grid can become unstable. This is because the grid was designed for power to flow “downhill,” from power plants through substations to homes and businesses — not the other way around…
